Towards a method for understanding the meanings of the Holy Qur’an by analysing its verses according to the language of the Arabs and their methods of speaking, as Arabs understood them at the time of the revelation of the Qur’an.

(Note: In brackets are sub-matters or meanings derived from the general meanings of the verse in the light of linguistic analysis, and red colour is used to distinguish it from the meaning in the light of linguistic analysis)

Surat Al-Baqarah 243

The meaning in the light of linguistic analysis:

O Messenger, has it not reached your knowledge? the story of those who came out of their homes in thousands, in order to avoid death, when Allah said to them: Die, and they died, then He revived them, so you will be amazed at what happened to them. Allah is the one who has favour on people by granting them life, but most people do not thank His grace.

(The meaning of the question “to the Messenger” indicates the following: Yes, we inform you of their story, so that you can contemplate about it; then you know that life and death are in the hands of Allah, and the nation that fears death when exposed to the attack of the enemies, and leave their lands and wealth to them, is a nation that Allah has written death upon; by humiliation of the enemies, and by plundering its wealth and resources, and the nation that fights defending itself, its rights, and its wealth, is a nation for which Allah has written life upon.

The meaning of the verse indicates that Allah Almighty tells his Messenger (PBUH) and his nation, the story of people who abandoned and vacated their homes to those who attacked them due to fear of death, then Allah caused death upon them by either plague, drowning, or any other cause, and then He revived them, so they know that the one whom Allah has written death upon, will inevitably die, and the one whom Allah has written life upon will inevitably live, even if he is surrounded by all causes of death, and to let them know that abandoning their homes is, as if they are dead, even though they are alive, and that staying in their homes, defending themselves, their homes and their families means that they are people who made life for themselves and their families, even if a number of them die, and the stories of the Qur’an are told by Allah to take lessons from, and these stories are all true)
